Glebe Elementary has a nest box trail of five boxes strategically placed throughout the schoolyard. The trail was established in 2016 with a grant of four nestboxes from VBS and another one from the Glebe Parent Teacher Association.
Our trail monitors consist of Elizabeth Gearin who is the original Trail Monitor Lead, with Cassidy Greenwalt and Colleen Holland providing monitoring support. Elizabeth initiated a monitoring educational program with the school in coordination with Science teacher Kate Sydney. It has been very successful in engaging young birders and conservationists.
Although, in recent years, the fledgling count has not been very successful, the species of birds that have nested consist of Tree Swallows, Chickadees, and House Wrens. We welcome members of our community to follow along as we monitor the trail and in doing so we take the opportunity to educate them about the trail and the birds that utilize the boxes.
The Glebe Elementary 5th graders monitored the nestboxes as part of their science curriculum. Their tweets 🐣 can be seen on their Twitter feed.
