The newest Arlington nest box trail opened in spring 2023 adjacent to the Rose Garden at Bon Air Park. The trail was planned and installed by Cassidy Greenwalt, an Arlington high school student who earned her Girl Scout Gold award. As part of the project, she designed an educational poster, educated over 200 elementary school students, and coordinated the work with her Girl Scout Gold Award Installation Team.
The trail consists of five boxes starting on the Wilson Boulevard side of the park and following Four Mile Run – providing a good water source for birds to drink and bathe. We hope that the boxes will attract nesting Eastern Bluebirds spotted nearby or other native cavity-nesting birds such as Chickadees, House Wren, Titmice, and Tree Swallows.
The trail monitoring team includes Matt Van Hook and Deb Chotner (co-leads from ARMN), Ginger Hays (ARMN), and Mary Frase (Fairfax Master Naturalist and Master Gardener of Northern Virgina).
